Just purchase a 68 AMX Go Pack car, 390 was a 4 speed been converted to a automatic. Rust free except for quarters. Looks like a set of 4.44s in rear with some chrome ladder bars.390 runs great trans has a stock convertor. Been stored for about ten years. Car has probably been bracket raced at one time noticed the rear spring eyes look bent.

I would like to set it up as a street strip car or even nostalgia super stock. would like to keep the 390 what mods should I do. How about transmission and convertor This is my first AMX not bad for 1,800.00 dollars.

390 is pretty stout.  Forged pistons are a smart upgrade.  You can run aftermarket 401 rods too.  I think the easiest cylinder head upgrade is the Edelbrock.  Automatic you have should be either a 727 torqueflite or turbo 400, either is fine, and almost any trans shop should be able to freshen it up when and if it is needed.  Converter is easy, just call the man and give him your credit card number....
I like SMR out of Canada, or Coan in Indiana, but there are lots of options.
To really make a modern racing engine the key is modern light weight pistons.  I have used BRC and Wiseco, and there are other options.  With a custom piston, you can go with Molnar rods for a 401.  You can either run the stock crank, or turn the crank to 2.1 journal with a better fillet radius, and again Molnar makes rods that fit the 2.1 journal and use a smaller, lighter pin.  Pick your compression, order the pistons to suit your crank and block and rods.
