Ray, is your car a "twin stick" or just an od car? My tsm and my car, most definitely has a vacuum switch. However, the tsm does show that a non twin stick does not have the vacuum switch.

I HAVE A 65 Twin Stick.. It does have the Vacuum switch just below the other components on the fender in the engine compartment..
I have to troubleshoot the electrical portion, fortunately, I have the TSM... |

My 63 440 American has the "twin stick" OD. It also has the vacuum switch. With OD engaged and accelerating from under 30 MPH to over 30 MPH the OD will kick in when you lift the accelerator. I have installed a vacuum gauge in the system and can hear and see it kick in at 17" vacuum. The vacuum line comes off the top of the manifold just aft of the oil filter mounting plate and goes directly to the switch.

There should be a couple plugs in the intake plate (manifold). Just remove a plug and install the correct size vacuum nipple. I think the plugs are 1/8" NPT.
Ray, the vacuum switch should be on the blue wire (blue w/tracer between relay and vac switch, blue from vac switch to coil) between the relay and coil. If that switch isn't present OD can be engaged earlier, I think. Didn't go into what it does in the operation description. It's shown in the diagram as normally open. I'd think it closes with low vacuum, so when you accelerate vacuum drops and switch closes, so it would allow grounding the coil. Coil won't ground with vac switch open. In any case, if you eliminate the vac switch and splice the wires it should work fine. I really don't see a need for the vac switch at all. I think it's a safety in case there is a short in the push-button on top of the gear shifter. If that button shorted closed OD wouldn't operate. Or if there was a short in the relay? Maybe just an engine speed thing... I checked 63 and 65 big car TSMs, and 64 American. Sometimes there was a difference in big car and small wiring, but all have the vac switch in the same place. |
