Hi...
I picked up an all original '62 Rambler Deluxe with 8,100 original miles on it a couple of months ago. It runs absolutely perfect, but with everything being original on it, I've been keeping busy replacing all hoses, belts and fluids. It has the Flash-O-Matic in dash auto trans and the original fluid. The trans shifts perfect and the fluid looks clean, but the fact it's been there for 46 years bothers me. I was warned against flushing the trans because it might screw up the seals. Others have told me to just drain out the old stuff and refill with new. The problem I see with that is that the newer fluids are highly synthetic and may mess with the seals. Still others have told me to just leave the fluid alone. What do y'all think? Any advice/recommendations?

Change the fluid, drop the pan and clean/service the filter.
Don't flush, just drain everything.
New fluid won't harm anything that's not already bad.
Do keep in mind that although these have commonly been mistakenly called "ford" transmisisons, they are not and should use the modern equiv of "type A" ATF, not type F.
Always go by what the owner manual and/or dipstick says.
IMO, Synthetic fluid won't mess with the seals anyway, but snake oil fixes can.

when I got it for my Flashomatic, I checked the TSM I have for the car.. I just asked for what it said at the parts store, and they gave me type A fluid..

Dexron III is compatible with the older type A and the BW trannys. I ran it for years in my M-35 equipped American and never had a problem at all.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. It'll be going in next week for a drain and refill. I should be good for another 46 years after that! ;)
