On what cars? The 1967 rim I have as a spare in the trunk of my Marlin is 5.5 inches wide.

Compacts got 4-1/2 inch or 5 inch wheels. Later on intermediates got 5.5 inch wheels optional but most have 5 inch. Wagons got wider wheels. SC/Rambler and HP cars got 6 inch.

My behemoth 1973 Ambassador with equally large F78-14 tires came with 14x5.0 rims, which is weird considering that my 1965 Ambassador wagon has smaller 7.75-14 tires yet wider 14x5.5 rims. My Hornet has 14x6.0, but it was originally ordered with radial tires. Radials automatically got you wider rims. You don't ant to put a big, fat radial on a little narrow rim. Bad things happen. 14x5.5 would be a good rim for any radial smaller than P225 in tread width.
