One more detail added, a replication of the painted pinstripe used on the '71 AMX. For '71 only, the stripe was below the beauty line. For an unknown reason,"72-'74, the stripe was moved ABOVE the beauty line. I obtained the correct specs for this stripe from Steve Guhanick and his original paint '71. Thanks Steve!  Yes,I had this stripe hand painted by a professional pinstriper!

As I continue to refine my Javelin AMX, I had my spare grille screen refinished to correct a dealer error.....It seems the selling AMC dealer in Syracuse NY  came up with a "fix" to correct the typical broken grille screen pins that let the screen stick out at the bottom. More of a hack, as their fix was to drill a hole (!) on each side of the bottom screen surround.  To add insult to injury, the holes are random and not matching distance wise! Of course, when holes have been drilled in the aluminum, repairing them becomes much more involved, if even do-able. So I had my extra grille (from a '73,) totally refinished and restored to the correct natural aluminum finish of the 1971 and early 1972 Javelin AMXs. I'll mount it up next year.  (Sorry I can't show the entire screen image size is too large)What do you think?

Scott:
So you had a black 73 screen that they removed the black paint? Nice job. As far as a match to the 71 version, I'll have to add my comment that they polished the aluminum trim too much. It's too shinny. I see guys do the same on the stainless window trim. From the factory the stainless trim was not chrome like. It had a brushed finish to it. Otherwise I think you have a nice piece. I can e-mail you shots of my grill. It's not NOS and was on the road in Minnesota for three years, but it's still a good representation of the aluminum finish that AMC used.

Hi Steve,
Being I used a base/ clear paint finish, and did a cut & polish, my entire car is too shiny!
I don't think it's possible to recreate the  original aluminum finish as all the road rash needs to be sanded out and then polished, automatically creating a buffed finish, always appearing different than a raw cast aluminum finish. But for me, it's a lesser evil than 2 trim screws showing. Hopefully age and the occasional drive in the northeast winter will dull it down a bit!

I think the difference is because the original was finished off with an anodized finish. It looks like it has been removed and then the bare aluminum polished. Looks good! Your car is over restored anyway so that's not an issue in my book. Whole car is great!

It's doing great thanks! It always puts a smile on face as I blast back to the past. ( I have all my favorite songs from 1971 being played from Amazon music into the car stereo.)
