My question is for the 65 Nailhead turbo 400 based trans out of a 68 Jeep vigilante. I have a complete engine and trans/transfer case from a 37K mile plow truck. I need to convert this to two wheel drive for use in my 65 Convertible. See the other thread I just started asking for axle width info as I know I need to convert the convert to open driveline.
Anyway back to the Turblow 400. How hard a trans are they to rebuild? I'm a former ASE master tech and it's been about 17 years since I built an automatic. Back then the few I did were the smaller IIRC 125 series GM front drive trannys. I remember the trans just not the designation numbers! I did a couple of 125's and a few 440 trans too. All of'em worked. Anyway, Can I do the 400 conversion myself? Or should I just scrap that idea? I know the speedo setup is milled on these cases and plugged so that will be easy. Any tricks to building this trans? special tools? I'm thinking maybe a manual valvebody? I like to shift! Right now the plan for the car is to hide a reciever hitch up behind the rear bumper with a flip down for the plates. I need a tow rig for my 22' pontoon boat and whatever else comes up. I'm thinking the Ambassadors long wheelbase and the torque of the 327 should do an excellent job of towing, plus be just plain cool while doing the job! |

I did the hidden hitch, drop down plate setup on my Hemi Javelin so I can tow my 77 Prostreet AMX. The 2wd 400 conversion is pretty common and there are lots of guys that can help you more then I can. I am a 727 guy myself. These transmissions are pretty common and rebuild kits are plentyful. It might be cheaper and easier to swap to 727.

I've rebuilt many an automatic, the turbo 400 isn't "hard" but the 727 and others always seemed "more logical".
Yes, he's mentioned a great point, that conversion has been done many times, you might even find info on the web. But I bet some Jeep folks here have done it. I LOVE that setup prostreet's done on his car! There are some incredibly well engineered and artistic mods on that car and I wish I could see it first-hand. It's impressive to say the least. |

Just get a 2WD TH 400, and gut it out, --use the 2WD stuff in your nailhead case. just remember, there's a bolt holding the center support-you have to take the valve body out to get to it and it's a 12 point head too.

No problem there - many cheap sockets are 12 point, otherwise, it's at least a "standard" size. Well, our friends overseas won't think so, but to us state-side, it's standard, just takes a 12 pt socket.
I've got a lot of THM 400 stats and images and instructions, etc. if you need. |

Thanks, guys.
I'll start looking for a local turbo 400 to gut.
The reason I'm using the 400 is it's going behind a Gen I 327 and the 727 isn't available for the 327.
The only bolt up options are Borgwarner automatics, Standard shift trans [hard to find] and Turbo 400's out of 65-68 Jeeps.
It will take me while to get to this car yet. I'm just trying to gather facts right now.
I need to start picking up the local "bulletin board" and see what I can find.
