This is the sequel to AMC HORNET at Riverside Raceway. Carlsbad was sometimes used by SCCA as a road race track.

Hey Chuck,
Great old footage. I remember when they called your Hornet the "Fastest Carpet in the West" because you still had your carpeting in.
Thanks for posting.

Is it my imagination or does that car corner incredibly flat?

It did corner that way. It was very preditable and stable at any speed. I got lucky! Very little understeer and if you got the tail out with too much power too early in corner exit, it was easy to correct - it gave you a little time to correct it. That's one advantage to a little longer wheelbase than my AMXs had. The AMXs were best on little tight autocross pylon courses. My '70 was better than the '68.

I've drag raced there, but didn't know they ran SCCA there too. Is that track even there anymore?
Very cool video!!

Carlsbad became an industrial park around 2004. Typical sad story. And they wonder why kids race on the street so much nowadays.

Chas, Thanks for the memories! Went down that 1/4 and return road many times in the early 70's. Eric

Thanks.
Did you ever get tempted to run through the return road like that? Maybe frowned upon.,, One thing I never thought about was how portable that Christmas light tree set up was. I bet you may have been at Lyons and OCIR back in the early 70's like I was too. Is that "Pete's Patriot" AMX car you have? I remember that car being at OCIR a lot back then. |
