Has anyone put an EFI system on their 196?  Since the intake plate is on the side, would it even be possible?  I'm having a tough time finding 2bbl carb for my 65 American and was wondering if this is an option.

You could put the EFI system off a 2.8L V6 powered Chevy. (I think that's the closest one to the 196). S-10's and S-10 Blazers had them. There was a guy making an adapter plate to bolt to the 196 to fit a throttle body but I never heard of anybody going through with it. It can be done just like any junkyard GM TBI swap that's been done before.

That would be a cool one for the GM TBI, I would think.

If you do it, get plenty of photos and document the process.
Neat to open the hood on an old rambler and see TBI

Tom Jennings and myself went over this a few years ago. The old 196 is a slow turner, so it doesn't pump a whole lot of air. Most modern fours pump more because they turn up so much faster. The GM 1V TBI unit from an older 2.5L four would be almost ideal. I think that's the one the adapter plate was made for. Some guy from Seattle made the adapter, I think... maybe Tom remembers? He's removed the page from his site. The 2V 2.8L TBI wouldn't be bad, but the 1V might be easier to deal with.
