I have a 1973 232 exhaust manifold, 1 barrel intake, automatic. I am wanting to replace it with one from a 1979 258 , 2 barrel intake, automatic, are they the same or will I have to modify the exhaust system?

Should be the same as far as fitting the engine up through 1980.
1981 saw the intro of the aluminum intake and divorced more sweeping exhaust.

I can tell you a 76 258 1 barrel intake, automatic and the 2 barrel intake, automatic, exhaust manifolds are they the same.
Now I have to ask if the 258 intake/exhaust are together why not bolt that to your motor? I would not try to unbolt the 2 manifolds as you then have to deal with maybe broken bolts and 1 more gasket between the 2 manifolds.

IMHO, you're better off taking them apart and dealing with the broken bolts. To get the manifolds to seal to the head properly, they need to be loose to each other. Also, there's a decent chance that the manifolds are slightly warped and now would be the time to fix that as well. No sense in going to all the effort to do the swap only to have an exhaust or vacuum leak and have to pull it all apart again.

I would also take the time to make sure that the EGR passages are clean and exhaust valve isn't stuck.

Will the stock exhaust hook up to the 79 manifold without any modifications? The problem is,  the 73 manifold  where the exhaust doughnut bolts up the bolt holes are shot, so I am replacing the exhaust manifold with one from a 79.

Thanks for all the help.
