I always loved the parts places listings on eagles - so messed up!
I mean the SX/4 _IS_ a 50, so why the multiple listings as if some were 50s and some were not?
Just like the 1970 Javelin is a mod 70, the Eagle SX/4 is a 50, so isn't having two lines, one a plain SX/4 and another a SX/4 DL50 rather redundant?

AMERICAN MOTORS EAGLE DL SX4 1983
AMERICAN MOTORS EAGLE DL-50 1981
AMERICAN MOTORS EAGLE DL-50 KAMMBACK 1982
AMERICAN MOTORS EAGLE DL-50 SX4 (1981 - 1982)
AMERICAN MOTORS EAGLE KAMMBACK 1982
AMERICAN MOTORS EAGLE LIMITED (1981 - 1985)
AMERICAN MOTORS EAGLE SX4 (1981 - 1983)

AND a bit of a different in depth - some will clear the vc and accessories, others won't so well. I tried to put my 1980 onto my 82 engine, or was it the 77 onto the 80? Well, in any case, it would not clear the valve cover well and had a bit different angle to it.
One was cast, the others aluminum.

I have an early 1980 Spirit (they changed some things halfway through 80). I don't know for sure that they didn't change it again, but there was a change from 1979 to 1980. The 1979 housing is cast iron, and the two outlets come away at a 90 degree angle from the base of the housing. The 1980 is aluminum, and the outlets (or at least the upper rad hose, I don't remember for sure about the heater hose) are angled 10-15 degrees toward the valve cover. The 1980 and up will not fit a 1979 and earlier (those sound like the issues you ran into billd, except the other way around). I don't know the other way around. It's been a little annoying having an early 1980 engine, because I have to order some parts for a 1980, and others for a 1979 to get the right one, so I've figured out a few things like this by trial and error.

Billd- what's the 50 indicate? I get it that there aren't any changes between a standard and a DL for the engine, just don't get the 50 designation.
