I'm curious about how this internal inspection of an oil filter is accomplished...what's the best method of cutting into an oil filter without imparting debris into the filter from the cutting process?

Pipe cutters work very well, the filter cuts open after only a few turns around. You can buy a filter cutter from a bunch of different websites (Jegs, Summit, etc.), I've never used one but I'm sure you can find reviews on them to find out if they're any good.
Or, if it comes down to it you can chisel a hole into the filter and then cut it the rest of the way with tin snips. |

I watched a AC/Heat guy used two "Wiss" brand tin snips. Stab them into the side, one a little behind the other and just start cutting. It took him three seconds. When he was done, there was a 1/4 inch band and two halves of the filter.
It happened so quick, that this is my interpretation of the process. As one snip is done cutting, he pushed forward and cut with the second. Back and forth, so that the one finished cutting held the oil filter in place while the next pair started cutting. No mess either, at least with him. I don't think this was his first time doing it, since he had a nasty 440 powered 70 Duster that looked stock. |
