Thanks guys, as Alex says the Performer is also taller than stock. I have correct air cleaner snorkel and heatstove, Motorcraft carb etc.

Things will be more correct.

Will the snorkel work with the R4B? Or would the dealership have likely simply dumped the snorkel and stovepipe? On my car that had the headers right from new, the entire snorkel and all the stovepipe and heat shrouds etc were all dumped, along with the smog gear. You don't have the smog pump but any thoughts on what to do with the rest?

Beautiful car, great job
Tony doesn't have ram air, and he already has an Edelbrock Performer intake installed. The R4B is essentially the same height.

On a ‘69 AMX an R4B will make the stock air cleaner rub the hood insulation and wear it out. With some spirited driving and a worn motor mount, something will give. Not sure about a ‘70 AMX, though.

Not sure what provisions there are for the stock hot air choke on the R4B or how it will work from stock. Most people probably use no choke or an electric choke on a Holley or Edelbrock carburetor, but not sure how factory ‘stock’ you want to keep it. I’m sure there’s an electric choke conversion kit for a Motorcraft carb.

For these reasons and for driveability I ended up sticking with the factory cast iron intake manifold, but upgraded to a Group 19 390 intake for my 343, casting number 3191736 F.

Sweatlock, the R4B does have provisions for the hot air choke, I believe. I suspect that in many cases the R4B was put on with the stock carb, especially for those that are looking for a bit of extra ooomph without going nuts and having to deal with manual chokes, headers, raunchy cams, etc.etc. Not to speak for Tony, but his car was likely in that category, with air and highway gears. It was ordered as a GT car for long road trips with A/C  and highway gears rather than a fire breathing drag strip machine.

I think I may have the instructions for the R4B somewhere and they did not say anything about chokes and air cleaners. Makes sense since the manifold was available on so many models and model years. I will see what I can find.

Thanks!

Chris

PS: The cast iron Group 19 intake for the 343 was a different one than the stock iron 390 intake?

Unless Tony has changed carburetors, he has a 670 cfm Holley Street Avenger. From my understanding , the cast iron 390 intake has slightly bigger runners than the 343 intake. I don't believe the 390 cast iron intake was a Group 19 option, but I could be wrong.

x2. You really have to see it in person to appreciate the effort Tony has put into it.

I used an aftermarket drop base with a 2" element and the factory lid.

Mine didn't. It's a 70-up model.  The boss is there for the choke heating tubes, but it is not machined for the tubes. I went electric. I don't know if this is the case for all R4Bs or just some of them. Edelbrock likely did many runs of this intake in the 70s.

I found the Group 19 parts listing and it has an illustrated cast iron intake for the 290, 343 under part# 319 1737. no casting number given. Not an option for Tony, nor needed, but intereseting. I suspect it might have been simply the 390 intake, but I don't know that.

I know Tony has an original Motorcraft but the 670 is on there now. Can't speak for which direction that will go, but it will be well done, knowing Tony!

I wrote p/n but I actually meant the casting number, which is 3191736 F. I corrected my post.

The ‘68 - ‘69 stock cast iron 390 intake manifold was listed as a Group 19 option for the 343 and 290 engines. As stated, the 390 intake has taller/larger runners but still not as tall as a Performer or R4B.

The ‘70 390 stock cast iron intake may also be considered a performance upgrade for the ‘70 360 (and 304), but I don’t know that for a fact. A lot changed in ‘70

1970 360 and 390 intake were same #5532. I have also read (don't know if true) that the early 71 360 intake was also the #5532.
