A few weeks ago a girl showed up at out local track with a new 5.0 Mustang and she ran 8.70 with it, so I would say your doing all right. Any idea what your car weighs and with you in it?

Gears, converter, and traction can be a complex subject. How the car launches - 60' - has a huge impact on the ET, but not so clear effect on how the car "pulls". Changes the noise, the drivability and the perception, but power is power (not torque which is essentially irrelevant in an engineering sense, and that is a complex subject!) so if the engine operating range power and weight is not much changed neither will the acceleration.

But on the starting line gears and converter have a HUGE effect on the engine available power. An engine is simply physically incapable of making much power at low rpm. So unless you have a traction problem anything that gets the engine into it's power band quicker will make a difference in 60' and therefore ET.

So with a stock converter and a heavy car and assuming it gets traction your gear change will very likely make it ET slower as the engine cannot get into it's powerband quickly. Be it will be a lot more drivable on the street though.

The way to make a good ET is make sure there is maximum traction, converter the car to get the engine in it's powerband (not torque - way above torque peak), than gear it to traction limit  or top end rpm, whichever is less.
