Isn't the double-joint held at least approximately aligned by the shaft held concentric by the rear spline and the center bearing? Not that there's not compliance at the cardan joint end but it prolly helps.

I'm just here to attest that Galvin's single cardan u-joint conversion kit is a good solution that drives very smoothly. It makes you wonder why they ever switched to using the double cardan joint in the first place.

The CV joint (double cardan in this case) smooths driveline vibrations by having the trans and axle yoke in phase. In practical use it doesn't make a real noticeable difference. The center bearing helps, but there is just enough play in the double caradan center to cause a nasty vibration once the centering mechanism has failed.
