Hi AMC people,
Time for spring engine assembly.
I would like to start all the engine builders to chime in on this one.
I’m mocking up my 343/360 and found .103” rod side clearance,
I’m running Chevy 6” rods with 2.1 journal on a 360 crank.
I was about to weld up the short side of the big end then called my friend who’s done hundreds of Chevy rod strokers he said don’t worry about it.
Any thoughts?

Most grind the 2.0944" rod journal to 2" with a large radius and use the Chev 6" rod with the 2" journal. The larger radius is actually making the crankshaft stronger then stock even though turning down.
If your welding to build up the journals for the 2.1" rod journal then you may as well resize it and go for a larger radius then stock.
Don't know if your gaining anything???
The oil pressure is determined by bearing clearance on the journal and not the side clearance so this is not an issue.
Side clearance does allow the forces on the rod to be offset from factory center, but the new rod is not a weak point for this minor offset.
Maybe someone drag race experience will chime in on this.

I have a 304 with aluminum rods and the same side clearance. It was out of a sand drag jeep and it turned 8800 rpm and used with a clutch-flight transmission. It looked new inside.
If your concerned with the side clearance you need the Rick Jones 360 stroker rod. Which I believe is a 250 chevy scat rod. It has a wider big end and may need to be narrowed. Rick Jones can tell you for sure.

I think your getting mixed up. The 390-401 rod journal requires the chevy rod to be narrowed,or the crank pin made wider when stroking/grinding it. The 360 rod journal is wider. Your not able to make it narrower when grinding/stroking. hence the need for the 250 chevy rod.

I'm referring to something like this:
But the Jeep crowd are just using the 6" x 2" Chev rods and not the 6" Scat rods that have to be narrowed.
These are not high RPM motors they are building. If going for higher RPM's, I'd definitely want things a lot tighter, just like SC397 has done.
They are also not doing offset grinds and using Chev 400 or custom pistons in some builds.
The Jeep crowd have been mixing and matching the 360 for a long time.
A little light reading on the subject:
