Many years ago I was enjoying my relatively ratty 390 4 speed 69 AMX. The motor had been put together with hand me down parts from 7 or 8 motors that I had parted out over the years. Never really intended to run it for more than a year or so while I built my "good" motor. Life, divorce, and the fact that it was so much fun delayed things. Other than an oil consumption problem, car ran fine. Low first gear T-10, stock rear end with 3.54 gears, perfect for banging gears and re-living my childhood.
I saw an ad for a "418 stroker assembly" from I believe Aris Asdourian for a reasonable price. I kept coming back to that ad. Finally got up the courage to call Mr. Asdourian, and I was too late. A couple more years go by, my financial situation changes, and I decide I can build pretty much what I had missed out on. Not really anything revolutionary, Barry Allen has been building his "420" for years. 4.195 bore, 3.8 offset ground crank. Aris' 418 had 4.185 bore which is a very popular bore size in Chevyville so ring options are virtually limitless. Off I went. I didn't actually have a 401, I was working with a 390. I went with 2" rod journals to get that 3.80 stroke. Actually ended up at 3.79 I had intended to get pistons after the crank was stroked. I originally intended to use a 4.185 Chevy piston, which would work with 5.85 long Chevy rods. When I got the pistons, the pin boss was too thick, needed to be machined to clear the counter weights of the crank. I had planned to cut the dome a little and notch the pistons for AMC valves, but a third machining operation that I would have to pay for was too much. The pistons were light weight versions which sounded good, but the domes were pretty thin especially where I needed valve notches. A quick call to BRC and the right pistons were on the way. I tend to over do everything, so coated skirts and domes even though I didn't need them. Two minutes discussing pin boss clearance and 3 weeks later I have pistons. Back in those days there were no Molnar or K1 rods. You could get Pep or Cat but Barry told me they were junk , so I went with Eagle ESP. 5.85 long for 2" journal with 7/16 bolts. You either understand why the rod should center on the piston or you don't. I had my machinist chamfer the other side of the rod, reversed it, and ended up pretty much centered. So the finished project is on the engine stand, I am embarrassed to admit for a while, but this is the year. 390 with 3.79 stroke and 4.185 bore for 417 cubic inches. The 390 was fun, the 417 should be funner. BB |

Hope you have flexible cervical vertebrae. Interested to see how much torque it makes.
