Well, having just replace the front carpet I can say there are plastic fasteners holding the original carpet up under the dash area against the firewall. I've tried pulling them out but haven't been able to. The plastic fasteners must have a barb or threads to make them grip when they are pushed in. [/QUOTE]
Probably these fasteners: https://amarkamc.com/product.sc?productId=324&categoryId=56

Front carpet did use a few black ! 1" barbed fasteners with a barbed shank about 1/4" in diameter. These were used at the top of the carpet to hold it up against the firewall. Neither the AMX or Javelin used any fastener at the bottom lip of the plastic panel under the rear window. And, YES they are the same plastic piece. Only the rear window L&R plastic side pieces are different between AMX and Javelin.

Yes, those hollow plastic push in fasteners that AMark sells are the ones used to secure the top edge of the carpet to the firewall. These were rather pliable when new but get quite hard over time and are difficult to impossible to get out without damaging them. The new replacements being sold look identical but are made of much harder material than the originals are are equally difficult to install as the originals are to remove. Heating them in hot water before inserting helps, but not much.
I made a insertion tool of a long grade 8 bolt with two nuts threaded up about 1/2" from the end. I then slipped two thick fender washers over the end. I inserted the stub of the bolt sticking out from the fender washers into the hole in the fastener and then drove the fastener in by hitting the head of the bolt with a hammer. I suspect that the more modern "Christmas tree" type push in fasteners that are made today may be a more practical replacement for the OEM types. I've seen AMC use big blob of dum dum (strip caulk) on the exposed end, firewall side, of the OEM fasteners. I have to assume that this was used to prevent the possibility of water entry from the outside. |
