Is there a special way to tear this wiring socket apart without causing damage?

Can you work both wires forward through the socket?

It's possible there is a break in the conductor within the sheath. Where the wire enters the socket is a stress point and years of bending back and forth can cause the break. It's not all that uncommon to happen.

Certainly, check out the contact with the bulb first as heavy suggested.

The inside of the bulb socket needs to be clean as well as the two base contacts. With the bulb removed you should be able to put a finger, wood dowel or similar object down in the socket to press down against the contact plate. This plate is spring loaded from behind and you should feel the contact plate push back. This contact plate needs to move freely. It may be hung up and not putting enough pressure on the bulb base to keep the base in full, tight contact with the two bulb contacts AND the two side locating pins tight against the slots in the bulb socket. The bulb should have some spring loaded tension on it when the bulb is correctly seated in the socket. The shell of the bulb base is the ground return path on a dual filament bulb. It may or may not be on a single filament bulb. It depends if a single filament bulb has one contact or two contacts on the base. Single contact bulbs use the shell for the ground path, dual contact, single filament bulbs do not.

It's been raining here, and the front left turn signal stopped working. 68 American. Extracting it revealed water inside, a bulb loose from it's base, base stuck in the socket, etc. Down in the bumper like it is, it gets blasted with road water.

The two wires (dual filament, 1157) were sealed OK, a pinched/melted boot, so I couldn't puush the wires in to clean the contacts. I farted around with folded up 22 grit wetordry paper, did an unsatisfactory job, but it's working again.

It later occurred to me what I want is an abrasive Q-Tip! And they exist!

Sandits, sanding sticks, sanding swabs. Cut down to two inches long, would be easy to get in there.

I poured some alcohol in there as a drying agent, sopped it up and let it dry.

On the job was made our own abrasive q tips.
Break a qtip in half, Chuck it in a drill and apply lapping compound to the tip
