i'm thinking of a cool budget 304 for my dayly driving 71 javelin.
I have 2 new sets of jeep 4.0 pistons I've been trying to sell, when I had and idea after looking at the 304 build that was just on here. It will make a 324.55 CI and 8.98 to 1 compression. I was thinking of a cam Crane sells that is sort of close to a 401 stock cam. any thoughts? Edited by pipefactory - Sep/19/2019 at 5:31pm |

While I am not up on the dimensions on either piston it sounds like a great plan to me if you have already have the parts. Some people get all hung up on the idea of mixing parts, but I have mixed and match parts from many makes and brands over the years. The math doesn't lie and if it fits, it fits.
Sound like it would be a really nice up grade from a stock 304. Tom

Have you checked if the 304 block can handle that much overbore? You're going from 3.75 to 3.88

I kind of think it is not a good idea just for saving money.
I know nothing about the 4.0 "Jeep" motor but... Pin to crown height and wrist pin diameter need to be the same. Then there's the valve relief issue. I would rather see a 401 crank in it than 4.0 pistons. No matter. You need to do the math before building a Franken Motor. Not that I would not..... I LIKE the idea. |

After reading the above post and seeing how much of a difference in bore diameter I am going to guess it's not going to work. I can't imagine the block will allow for a .130" overbore to the point I wouldn't even spend the money on the sonic testing. Build yourself a 4.0 with a small power adder with 5-8 pounds of boost and use those pistons.

Wrist pin is the same compression high is .008 shorter so it'll be .020 in the hole

It’s been done, the 304 blocks can handle the overbore. I don’t know if it’s a good idea, but it has been done. A sonic check is definitely required. Andy

You do not want it that deep. You need some quench. Add the thickness of the head gasket to that .020 in the hole and you have a fair space up there. That's all my opinion based on some experiences. |
