Tom,
Did you use the steering box you ordered?

Yes, it's been in this whole time, and I haven't thought about it since.

I got the Lares rebuilt from RockAuto.

Was the spline count and diameter of the pitman arm shaft the same as the Rambler?

I got a new pitman arm -- they are actually plentiful but listed under the wrong number -- and it was exactly the same. Manual box, to be clear. Power steering pitman arms are easy to find. Manuals, there's a Mevotek number. I have it if you need it.

prices are not unreasonable; a Lares rebuilt from Rockauto is around $250.

I dont think that saginaw 525 will fit Americans. American has the two front bolts vertically in the same line. That shoud fit newer cars like hornets and gremlins. Just a heads up

Aha, thanks for the info! Water under the bridge for me, but thanks, and good for the record here.

Tom,
What car did you put the 525 box in?  What is the pitman arm number?

The car is a 1968 American, base model, manual everything, 199ci, 3-speed column shift.

I never bought the new Borgeson 525 box, I bought a Lares rebuilt whatever manual from rockauto...

Here's my note on the manual pitman arm:

Mevotech MK3106 is the correct part for manual steering gear (installed, working). K3055 WRONG PART (power steering; large hole). SHOULD BE 1.08" outside diam (of splines, probably 1.00 root). Rare Parts 20393. Moog K-3106 -- not available.
