Decided to go through and replace some gaskets since I had a thermostat on the way out.
Put the water pump back on and the impeller is hitting something when spun by hand. It's every revolution. It doesn't do it when off the engine, and nothing changed in side or with the water pump. It wasn't hitting anything before as I've put about 300 miles on the car since pulling her out of a 20 year hiberntion. Any ideas?

Check the length of the fan bolts. If too long they can go through the hub and hit the "nose" of the pump. Maybe a washer left off one? |

Binding before the fan has been installed. Pump only.
I'm thinking I need to install with a torque wrench....maybe I'm over right.

the front-most headbolt is different from the rest, a tiny bit shorter... i know you didn't change it but if it was super-close to striking the bolt, and your new gasket is a tiny bit thinner, or the water pump is shifted to the right .01", all of which things are perfectly within 'normal', it could tick tick tick ... since it's probably one impeller blade, you could spin it a bunch of times to make a little nick/shiny spot, pull it off, and see if that blade is bent outward slightly. if the nick is teeny-weeny, you could just file that corner, or tap it in slightly to clear. congrats on reviving the old beast. |

You migt just try a thicker gasket. Double the thin stock gasket or make another from thicker gasket material.

I feel silly...then again water pumps are not a normal thing for a VW guy...
I had too much RTV on one side and I think it was causing the pump to not seat completely, kind of cocking it a little. Took it off and reinstalled...no issue now.
