I don't know if this is the right place to ask this. Has anyone ever used another type of gas tank in an 68 American. Mine is rusted inside. I was wondering if another model would work.

Supposedly early Mustangs are the tanks of choice. The fuel inlet is close to lining up and I think the sending unit has the same OHM ratings as the AMC. The only drawback is having to cut out the trunk floor to fit the tank unless you can figure out a way to mount it underneath. You can also put a Want Ad on this forum and maybe some one has a good used tank.

American Parts Depot sell a 1968-70 AMX/javelin new American made fuel tank for $349.00.
Or, you could spend some time restoring your rusty tank. I'd look for another tank if you have rust through. Most of the time its gas that has turned to varnish with minor rust. Here is a tank I restored using POR-15 Fuel Tank Repair Kit. I think the kit is $80.00. First I filled the tank with about two quarts of nuts and bolts, assorted screws, and shook and shook. That got rid of most of the varnish and rust. If you can get some barbecue scrubbers or other wire brush devices in the tank that will help. My 68 AMX tank smells like varnish and show minor surface rust I am going to do the same treatment to it. The kit consists of 2 qts Marine Clean, 1 qt Metal Ready and 1 qt gas tank sealer. I did my other cars tank two years ago and no issues. |

NO 68/70 Javelin/AMX gas tank is going to fit under a '68 American.

I was looking at the TSV under fuel tank. There are illustrations of the different model's fuel tanks. The sedan fuel tank assembly-Rambler Series seemed narrower and possibly could be altered to fit. Illustrations can be deceiving. Without a tape measure and a tank to measure it is only a guess. If repositioning the fuel filler spout makes it possible that's an option. I've done a few in my day. I have owned several '65-'68 Mustang FSTBKs and removed a tank or two, I would not cut a hole in the trunk floor of a different car to get it to fit. Most of the people I know who have a mustang fuel tank, put it under the bed of their custom 50's-70's Chevy P/U. They didn't like hearing the gas slosh around in the tank behind the seat. |

I've said this before. But I'll repeat. I put a 65 Mustang tank under the trunk floor of a 65 Rambler American. I suspended the tank using bolts through the floor and brass bushings as spacers. I had to modify the fill spout using common exhaust tubing. The stock fuel filler and hose worked with the above modification. I had to reposition the muffler and reroute the exhaust because the Mustang tank was wider than the American tank. The stock Mustang fuel level sender worked fine in the Rambler. Mustang tanks are one of the cheapest reproduction tanks out there. You can also shop on Ebay (which I did not do) for a universal fuel tank which might fit your application. Joe

I appreciate all the help with this. I took Pacerman's suggestion and ordered a Mustang tank and sender. It was actually less expensive that way. I've heard good and bad about resealing the tanks.
The car is modified anyway so some more mods won't hurt.

Purchased a reproduction tank from Kennedy American back in October 2013. (1968 javelin) Still haven't gotten it. Called in Jan. and he said tanks would be in in March. I'm waiting til Monday to give KA a call. My old tank was so bad, I cut it up with a pair of scissors and folded it up like cardboard. Good luck on the mustang tank. Let us know how it works for you.....Del
