I noticed he replaced a bunch of stuff that is often a casualty of a stripped timing gear.

It has happened to me but not on an AMC, last time it was an Olds 307.

Funnily enough, also had that happen on an Olds 403 in my Dad's 98.

my 1st thought is timing BUT if cam timing is off it'll do that. does the engine run?

there's always the off chance the exhaust is plugged...

Thanks guys, This is the plan to troubleshoot.
  • Check for correct distributor placement 180 & Rotation
  • Clean Carb & Rebuild if necessary , Check Carb Float, Check Needle & Seat,
  • Check fuel pressure.
    • Between 2-6psi. If more add inhibitor
    • Fuel pressure Gauge
  • Worst Case is a skipped cam timing gear.

Sounds like you're on the right path, eliminate the easiest first. Also when you say fuel is shooting out, if you mean almost like in a mist when cranking I'd lean towards ignition but if it's coming out in a steady stream say for example the vent, you've got a stuck float.

Like I said, disconnect the coil wire from the distributor and see if that makes any difference when cranking.

Shoots up in a mist. I've seen videos with the same thing happen but as a fire ball.

In a mist?

Then it is not the carb or fuel pressure at fault.

My bet is cam or ignition timing. Most likely cam.

I hate easter egg hunts.

"◦Worst Case is a skipped cam timing gear." And if it went hop-skip and jump, you'll be playing 'touch-a-piston' with the valves

Try putting a known good used fuel pump on. I have been sending about half of them back due to putting out too much pressure. The problem is bad enough now that I start every engine with the same known good pump then, switch it over to test the new one.

Check the order that the Plug Wires are connected for firing order at the spark plugs. Easy to make a mistake where each is supposed to go.
