To all the AMC buffs out there-
I had one heck of a time finding a Carter M-6906 fuel pump for my 390 motor. EVERBODY is out of these and Carter says they don't know when or if they will make more. There aren't any rebuild kits either. The Airtex fuel pumps are cheap and don't have the GPH to keep up with the big carbs. After literally 10 hours of internet searching, I found a rebuild kit for these listed under the Carter X pump used on 1967-71 428CJ BOSS 302/429 and 429CJ. Exactly the same as the AMC fuel pumps.

Carter street pump works great.  They don't look stock becuase of the shiney finish but they work wery well.  That being said, a rebuild kit option is great.  And heres a place that has them now, in stock

I dont know if i am being paranoid or if this subject has ever been discussed before but what if our part sources run out of fuel pumps and water pumps for our cars. I for one hate throwing away good usable cores and was wondering what other people do with theres. I sure would hate to see the next generation of caretakers for our cars not be able to get such parts.

Save all your cores.  I have always done that for waterpumps because the early ones are hard to find.

I had to get a new fuel pump after one of those "don't fix it if it isn't broke" stories.

I had excessive length in my input hose to the Edelbrock fuel pump I got last year (#1716 from Jeg's at $179.00!!, but they don't seem to stock them anymore).  I also had new fittings I intended to install as well.  After shortening the hose (braided steel), I over torqued the new fitting and cracked the pump just beneath the input port.  Not wanting to fork out $$ for another Edelbrock pump, I put the Carter back on that I had shelved last year--but the pressure was terrible and wouldn't hold.

Ordered the M6906 from the website suggested here, and got it next day w/free shipping!  OK, great, but when I put it on the same thing--terrible pressure, down as low as 3psi reading on my inline fuel pressure gauge.  WTF!  Are these rebuilt fuel pumps?

Could it be the 90 degree angle fittings causing this?  (See picture--sorry for poor focus).

mechanical fuel pumps for non Fuel injection are not high pressure pumps, typically 4-10 psig

I doubt if the fittings are the issue unless the inside diameter of the fittings is small

Other thing is are you sure you have a good gauge

Pretty sure it's the pump, Mike.  It's barely putting fuel into the fuel filter.  And the gauge is good, too--the needle never danced around like it now does with this pump (used to have a fairly consistent 6 psi with the Edelbrock pump).   Replaced the lower inlet hose this morning and checked to ensure the fitting were tight--no difference.  The car will start and run but sputters easily when applying throttle.  Might have to go to an electric pump if I can't find a decent mechanical.  Edelbrock discontinued the AMC 1716 and Jegs doesn't have any left in stock, nor does Summit.  (Not that I'd necessarily want another Edelbrock, as the outlet port threads were precariously close to the bottom of the unit which I'm sure made for a weak point and hence the easily cracking of the case.)   Don't think the crack can be welded up or salvaged--and I'd always be worried about it anyway...not the way I want to cruise. Disapprove  Thanks for the reply.
