That sounds about right. My slightly heavier 63 Classic wagon with hopped up 4.0L gets about 22 on the highway -- AW4 OD auto trans with 3.55 gears.

You don't have a high enough choice for mine.
Here's the little SX/4 (weight is 3200-3300 pounds as I recall): 1994 4.0 liter, T5 behind it, can't recall gear ratio. I usually wind it pretty high before I shift as it just starts to really get happy in the higher RPM range. Pure commuting back and forth to work, mostly a mix of town at 30 mph and some backroads at 40-45 mph I get 18-20 mpg. That's a LOT of stop lights, stop signs and stop and go. 80% Highway with 20% in-town it's 22 plus. A trip to Perry from here, then from there to West Des Moines for some shopping, then to Altoona for shopping, then home, then back to town got 22.1 mpg. On the highway, not pushing hard but keeping 65 and lower, it's in the range of 22.5 - 30. The 30 is staying out of it and moving 60-65, the 22.5 is running 65+. These are winter figures, run through a spreadsheet with data starting about the 1st of December to current, 11 fills. I let it run a couple of minutes when it's cold or cooler as the transmission does not like to go into 2nd or 3rd when it's really cold. So I idle it in neutral to warm it up a bit. 4400 miles on the 4.0 rebuild, so it's just getting broke in a bit. I expect better as it loosens up and the weather clears and warms. metoo, not enough categories.
my 63 American, 195.6 OHV with Weber and "RV" cam, T-96+OD, consistently gets 23-24 long term average worst case, 25 mpg if i keep my foot out of it. I'm going to make another pass through jetting (it's close, but i have a flat spot) and recheck. The 232 with GM EFI on it got 20 mpg, in a 63 Classic wagon with a Flashomatic. I could never get my 70 Hornet better than 18. Very frustrating. 258ci, same Weber (32/36), "RV" cam, Torqueflite, I forget the axle but it was typical factory mileage job. Ran great and fast as heck just lousy mileage. |

Sounds about right - the bottom one is indeed a bit curious - I got 21-22 with my 68 and 232 stick. But I hear quite a few folks talk of low mileage with some of the 258s. Weber is a decent carb, too, for economy from what I gather. The TF transmission - I'll assume that's standard AMC issue mopar transmission, so no locking converter, no OD. You lose a lot of power through the 70s automatics. Yes, they did run great and were pretty quick in their day, well, even now they aren't bad. I had a 77 AMX with 258 and 4 speed, loaded, got decent mileage. Did very well in the mountains around Denver. Doc I'm not sure being in Iowa what they do different in the fuels here - it's not like some zones where the fuel is so bloody complex from month to month, but can't say that they change nothing either. I've not researched that part for our state. Again, I'm rather anxious to see how this does as it breaks in, and the weather gets nicer. I fully expect it to do pretty well when the temps are in the 50s and 60s and I get some more kinks worked out. I also wonder about that 30 wt oil in the T5 - the transmission experts said absolutely, that's what the factory now recommends, straight 30 wt engine oil for a NWC T5, but she's really stiff in the winter - grinds a tad into 2nd and 3rd, 1st, 4th and 5th smooth as silk always, then after a long hard sustained highway drive when it's hot, it's hard to get out of gear to up-shift but goes nicely into the next gear! Go figure. May need to reduce it a bit with a small dose of ATF. I have synthetic gear lube in both differentials, and synthetic ATF in the transfer case. doc - IMO, those figures are not terrible. Remember, alignment, tire pressure, DRIVER habits, etc. all play a role in fuel economy. Edited by billd - Feb/27/2012 at 7:34am |

Doc, you need to add a 22+ to the poll at least! I average 19-20, so went ahead and voted 17-21, but I get 22 on the highway at 65-70. I suspect I could get 24-25 if I kept speed in the 55-60 range, but the heavier and less aerodynamic wagon I have won't hover around 30 like Bill's SX/4.
Tom's Hornet was probably running under the torque band a lot -- the one he could never get over 18 mpg with. It should have got in the low 20s on the highway at least! 18 wouldn't be bad for LA traffic, of course, but sounds like it did a lot worse in traffic if the best he could do was 18. The sixes like to cruise around 2000 rpm with the factory cam. A torque cam will pull a bit lower, around 1800 rpm, but it's still best to keep it around 2000. All of them I've had -- 196, 232, 258, or even 4.0L seem to really like to cruise in the 2000-2500 rpm range. Doesn't really matter what cam as long as it's a torque or near stock cam. Racing cams will of course produce best power and torque at a higher rpm. |
