My 440 coupe with the 199 got excellent mileage...

in fact, it was close to double what I get in the 440 convertible with the 290.  Which is OK, the coupe was a DD in the 80's when I was in college.  The convertible is currently a cruiser/joy rider, which actually gets close to the mileage I get with my DD, an inline '96 F150.  Not quite...LOL

Nice info guys, thanks.  I called Larry at Cliffs and he said that Mr Clifford did make an adaptor and he really liked qjets too.  But alas, no more are made.  So it isnt a base for a AFB afgter all.  For me, Ill be fine getting one runalbe, i even have a rebushing bit with the brass inserts bought from 20+ eek , years ago.  i wll try running the later model with the better machined wells, better castings, and the APT funtion.  Thats where it can really be fun.  That is 'adjustable part throttle"  which is a little external mixture adj "D" head at bottom of carb.  It adj how far metering rods sit in jet, so you can literally adjust off idle mixture.  Give me lean cruise mix or give me death!  And at WOT, give me the fuel!  Thats the idea, a sheep at idle/cruise, a lion at 3/4 up throttle.
I did make some headway with the 390 in my quest to get a lean cruise w/o hurting immediate tork.  I drilled the PV channels to .036 and it feels real good. This, while retaining the 56 jets.  Goal is to get to 52 jets w/o noticing tork drop off.  i probably should use an AF tool beyond what ive done.  Id like to know what others have as far as jets go.  Kinda surprised i need so rich.
ps-Build, ADD peeps have more intelligence Ive heard.   I hear that is true for nearsighted peeps too.  Guess whos blind, haha.

Thanks Josh.  Can you ask him what qjet went on originally? And if secondaries throttle plates (the ones below, not on top) are set to open fully , or at 45%.

Hello all! I know kinda odd intro post, thanks for parking the bus Josh, hahaha. So I was sent this link via facebook and was told to check it out, because it was up my alley. If it hasn't been guessed yet, it's my 88 cherokee with the q-jet LOL.

Thikstik:
to answer question 1, the carb originally came from an 80 pick up with a 350. I don't know whether or not it had the factory spec jet/rod combinations in it though, it was one of the dreaded mass reconditioned over the counter carbs that mr ruggles warns about, lol. I never bothered running the rod/jet numbers against factory specs.

Question 2, When I started with the carb the secondary throttle plates opened about 75% at most, I made the adjustment to have them open fully, that being said the primaries were set to open only a little over 75% as well.

I read through some prior posts,  I'll throw this out there, I'm using a flipped over cheap adapter plate made to adapt a spreadbore intake to a square bore carb (yeah the mr gasket junk). It works ok, however edelbrock makes a much nicer unit, I may try it come spring.

My jet rod configuration isn't 100% yet, so I'm not giving out any specific numbers, not to mention I can play with the timing a bit more once I recurve the distributor (also running GM HEI, sourced from Josh,  lol). Before I proceed with that, an air fuel meter is my next step to getting it right, as of now it's a bit rich.

Oh forgot to add, I retained the AW4 with this jeep, even though offy claims it can't be used with an auto tranny, I beg to differ, lol. Stock cable works just fine with a modified bracket, the tricky part is getting the throw right for the tps.

Thanks Shaggimo.   You dont see that combo everyday!  So you do have full opening of all plates? If so, do you think that the motor is  handling full opening?  Makes sense that it should be close on cal...the chevy of that year may be of less power than your i6.  Do you have it on oblong or front to back?

re fit on my ciff intake, maybe a double stack would work.  The present square bore on now, then a spreadbore to squarebore.  Or let the farna man make one! Farna, what kind of wood is best?  Sure would insulate well ftm.

Yup, I do have full opening on all plates, The engine seems to handle it quite well, on the primary side (took a bit of tweaking with the APT), it's great, just a bit rich I believe, once I put a gauge on there I'll be able to fine tune a little better. Secondaries took a bit of patience to get them to come alive at the right time, and get a close to right rod/hanger/spring tension combo, but again truth won't be told until the gauge goes in, lol. My only gripe, sometimes the tranny is a little slow to down shift, which apparently is one of the flaws of the AW4, so I get a little bog if I stab the gas at 30 mph, but say I stab at 45, it takes off like stink, lol, or from a dead stop for that matter.  Gears would help me out I'm certain though, I'm still running a 3.55 with 31-34 inch tires Shocked . I know I gained some wicked top end by doing this, it's neat to hear the secondaries gradually open up as the engine demands more fuel/air, and it just pulls hard passed 70mph (it used to peter out prior to 65).

The way the offy intake is designed being a dualport, you can only put the carb on one way, sideways, lol.

Any hard wood is what I would prefer, but a close grain pine would work. NO PLYWOOD!! Regular plywood has some voids in the inner layers (gaps) and it may not seal 100%. Marine plywood is exterior with no voids -- the lack of voids is th only difference.

How cool is that.  And youve connfirmed that the amc 6 can take all 750 cfm.  I really want to do this as my holley 390 just did its thing today.  Since new, it has had a psycho idle mixture problem.  Set it perfectly using a vac gauge, and it may be a week month or the next day and it will become pig rich AFTER a warmup.  Just today it happened after a hot restart and it took almost TWO turns of idle mix screws to get badk a nice idle.  Holley should have taken back this carb when under warrantee.  thanks again
