Did the greasing.
So much lithium went into the bottom greasing points that I wonder when they were last done - long long ago. The semi-fluid grease I put in the top greasing points displaced the yellow grease that was in there and eventually ran out of the level plug in the spring tower. On the left side, the level plug was hidden around the back of the tower. Perhaps the tower had been out at some point, or perhaps it was put on wrong in the factory. From the caked lube round the plug, it hadn't been removed in a while, so the last person who applied the grease gun didn't realise what it was there for. And nor would I, if I hadn't read the TSM.** Odd that only the TREs have provision for greasing. The other ball joints are all blank. The same both sides. The plugs in the TREs make it pretty obscure that they can be greased. Again, an awful lot of grease went in there. Wonder why AMC decided to put plugs in the greasing points instead of nipples, and why only the TREs can be greased. **I've thought in the past it's a negative sign, if a car comes to you with no shop manual. Makes it unlikely that it's been properly maintained. Mind you, that pearl of wisdom didn't stop me buying the car. Ivor |
