I Have removed one side on my 69 Javelin with the factory style remover. My question is how do I get it out of the tool safely? The other thing is I have new springs to put in so how would you compress them enough to get them in. It looks like I need to compress them four inches. The last set I installed had the fenders off and I used a spring compressor but it will not fit in the fender well. I hope I do not have to take the fenders off again.  Thanks for your help.    Heavy Duty Spring Compressor Tool (2 Pieces), Ultra Rugged Coil Spring Compressor, Strong and Durable Spring Compressor by Shankly

$59.95   Here is what I bought and used and it worked great. They are very heavy made!

I used my 20 ton hydraulic press. I had the press and spring wrapped with two 2" ratchet straps in case something slipped. Be very careful, lots of energy stored in those springs.

You might take the spring in the tool to a machine shop to decompress and compress. It would take 2 trips unless you have 2 tools.

You have to make the decision based on your personal experience and abilities, but I successfully removed/replaced 4 springs with the McPherson-Strut spring compressor tool supplied by Autozone/Oreilly loan-a-tool.  I used the tool with the compression nuts down.  I was as nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs for the whole procedure, but have successfully removed the springs and released the tool on a parts car, and have removed/installed the springs to replace the bushings etc on a 68 AMX.  Once again, it is up to you to gauge your ability to do this kind of work - very dangerous - make sure you are up to the task as your results may vary.

I cheat, I use the sub frame of the car. basicly I lower the sub frame onto the spring with tool installed just enough to get tool off spring cups then just jack the car back up to release pressure off spring. and do the same to get new springs in the too. easy peasy.

1. Call life insurance company and add $1 million on yourself.
2. Do it yourself and pray for success.
3. Just take it to a shop with the proper tool and press.

My cocky inexperienced self went for it once on a junkyard Rambler driver side. Took a shot to the chest and jacked me backwards by 3 feet. Dazed and confused (and bruised) I kept working and pulled the whole front suspension apart. Luckily, the passenger side spring was already out. By the time I got home I looked like Joe Frazier did a dance on my chest with barbells!

Whatever you decide, be extremely cautious.

We used to place them under the hoist and lower the hoist onto them, remove the Kent-Moore holders, and slowly raise the hoist. We reversed this to put different springs in.

Me - I use an internal spring compressor hooked into the coils from the inside, draw the spring together then put the K-M tools back on or I use a press, or I have, as said by others - used a car.

What-ever you do, don't "Red Green" it - duct tape absolutely will NOT hold.

We used to do a lot of these back in the old shop - but then most of our customers owned Ramblers....
(funny thing, the boss even called the newfangled AMX a "Rambler" I'll never forget when he said "Bill, go get that green Rambler out there and replace the valve seals". It was a forest green AMX with 390)

I removed dozens of these 30 years ago on AMX's & Javelins that I parted out. (Still have a bunch in storage). With the car pretty much stripped down, I kicked the springs out of place, however, I've never attempted to put one back in place on an AMC.

My 2 post lift has square arms, so I when removing the coils I have the car on the lift. I squash the spring between the floor and lift arm while I lower the car. I would rather do that than throw it in my car and ride around with it bouncing all over.

Can't quite kick that hard, eh? To get them back in place, I mean! HAHAHA.   Wink
