I have a new [to me] Eagle with an automatic transmission on the way out.  Over the first three days I've owned the car things keep worsening...

- It started with some hesitancy to shift into 3rd
- Then it wouldn't shift into 3rd at all
- Then reverse was slow to shift
- Then reverse wouldn't shift at all
- Now it seems like... something... is wrong in 1st; everything seems OK at lower speeds, but when accelerating there comes a point where it feels like something starts to slip and no more acceleration happens

Any thoughts or things to check?  I checked fluid and it was at the add-a-pint mark, so I put in more but did not perceive any difference.  That was just before the last symptoms listed above.

Is the fluid clean? Do you have any idea when it was serviced last, the trans filter may be plugged and cannot draw fluid. You'll need to remove the pan to service the filter. Also you can check to see that the kickdown is properly adjusted, and is hooked up. This is the long rod with the loop style end, it is hooked to your throttle linkage on the driver side. Test with the engine off, to be working properly, when you have the throttle wide open, the rod must be pushing backward toward the rear of the car. Hope that helps SH

I checked the fluid and it was low, but adding a quart didn't change anything.  Didn't look all that unusual on the dipstick - redish, clear, etc.

I have a filter and gasket on the way and will plan to change it all out.

Is there anything else I can easily service while I'm in there?  I figure I'll do every easy thing I can *now* and then if it doesn't work I'll pull the whole thing and rebuild.

Well, it never hurts to remove the valve body from a trans that has sat up a long time (or was very seldom driven far for a long period) and give it a thorough cleaning. In this case I'm not sure it will help. Sounds like a high mileage trans that is in need of a rebuild. It won't hurt, but have a TSM handy. There are little valve balls and springs that can come out of a valve body when disassembling that you can't tell where to put back! There is a 73 TSM on-line that should be sufficient. An Eagle should have a 998 trans.

Would you adjust the bands while you're in there?

Reverse kinda works kinda doesnt... it's very hard to convince it to shift into reverse but it will every once in a while and then it works.

It won't hurt to adjust the bands too, I would. As others have said, sounds like it's rebuild time, but if you have the time and patience to spend a few bucks (mostly in fluid.. you can save most of what you drain off and put back in though) it won't hurt to clean the valve body and adjust the bands. Might gain you a few days/weeks/months, might not.
