There is a long thread on the forum about 1968-69 AMX tan dashes. There is a picture of the five different colors of tan( light umber, tan, etc) in my 68 AMX. Dash tag # 2930  (mid year?). I'm 2nd owner. The different tones jazz up the interior.

This color mismatching issue has been around since day one on both 68 and 69 models with the tan (68) and saddle colored (69) interiors. 1970 models were much improved. Red interiors in 1968 and to a lesser extent in 1969, were somewhat better color matched piece to piece than the brown interiors were.
Those of us with black interior AMXs and Javelins (68&70)and charcoal gray(69 only)have to consider ourselves fortunate to not have this problem !
Long time AMC fan. Ambassador 343, AMX 390, Hornet 360, Spirit 304 and Javelin 390. All but javelin bought new.

I have read various vendors/suppliers made the different dash sections for the 1968-69 AMX. And, because the manufacturers did not use the same shade of tan  is the reason for the different colors. Was it intentional or a lack of communication?

I would assume lack of coordination. There were two runs of the 68 tan speaker cover- the first one was almost brown and a terrible match; the later one was much better. It seems they tried to fix that and get it down to 7 shades from 8.

What is funny is that the AMX Story 1968 brochure is a tan interior car and they painted the entire dash (with the correct interior paint color) so that it would match and not look horrible. So they knew about this mismatch immediately and didn't want it in the brochure.

The colors also have changed over the years due to the plastic aging. The UV protection back then just wasn't close to what we have available now.

On my 68 saddle tan interior I found there were much lighter colors in areas that had been hidden from sun. I posted a pic of that in the other thread.
