wheel backspace is more important than axle width especially with a leaf spring car.

That's what I'm really after. The stock AMC 20 in the '69 AMX limits the choice of wheels due to it's width. I'm going with a 9" with the new engine. -Steve- |

most late model AMC wheels had 4.5 bs. In a leaf spring car with 275 rubber on a 4.5 wheel you are very close to the spring. For the AMX Likely you will need to move the springs inboard and mini tub to fit big rubber regardless of axle width. Just not enough room in the wheelhouse

Might be a bit wide for the AMX, specs on that rear axle show 60.5" axle flange width. Right now an 8" wide wheel with a 5" backspacing is a perfect fit. Problem is there aren't that many 8" wheels with a 5" backspace. The Weld Prostar is but the set I bought a few years ago had a crazy amount of run-out and for some reason the front ones tore up a pair of front hubs. I got rid of them. Most appear to be 4.5" or 5.5". -Steve- |

5" backspacing 16x8's used to be more common than 15x8's. Factory Jeep (5 on 4.5" TJ's) 15x8's are 5.5" backspacing so that's in the ballpark anyway. XJ, ZJ & TJ 15x7's are 5.25" backspacing, so they're also in the ballpark but narrower obviously. I'm not so much suggesting you use Jeep wheels, but maybe look to aftermarket wheels meant for Jeeps.

Went out and measured the rear axle in the '69 AMX. I removed the rear tires & brake drums then clamped a section of 1" square tubing to each axle face then measured between them. Measures 58 3/4" Also measured the leaf spring width, it's 43 1/2". -Steve- |
