Hi all -
I have done some reading here and elsewhere and I would like to hear again from you all if you don't mind. The doors on my '69 AMX are banged up and I don't want a lot of putty of course. I have seen that doors from several years of AMX and Javelin will suit with minor aberrations. I seem to recall that there may be a door hinge difference and maybe some other minor things. What should I look out for? How difficult is it to replace the skin (use my old door which is otherwise OK)? Thank you for the info. - W

Finding a door skin would be difficult at best 71-74 skins are different. replacement would not be hard. 68-69 are the same except the 68 has three bolts on both hinges and the 69 has two on one hinge. The shell for 70 was changed slightly because of door panel changes. buit should work. 71-74 has had major changes.

Another option to consider is the technology available for repairing dents. The stud gun is one of the best tools marketed for the common man in the last few years. Another option if you are trying to save the paint is the paintless dent repair kits that are available. Joe

68 and 9 are not alike. The window regualor is different and the mounting holes for it different a bit. 70 door is best for a 69.

Javelin doors are the same door, year by year. So that increases your options. Door window glass is not the same from a Javelin to an AMX until 71 then the same.. |

The holes in the door to mount the regulator is the difference. Some are slots. They are cut differently between the early years. The 71 to 74 door has an indention in the bottom for the regulator base to sit in. Just some of the differences. I've built a lot of these cars and dealt with these issues. Yes they look alike. Later doors work well on early javelins. Early doors work great on later javelins. If you use the glass and regulator for that door. Just pay attention to installing your regulator in whatever door you select.

Per your request to see the damage: Here are a couple pics - the passenger door - maybe. The driver's door looks awful bad |

If the inside bottom of both those doors are rust free, I'd save them. Especially that right door.
There is a tool that you can fold back the edge of the door all the way around, and take the skin off. Then take a hammer and dolly to those dents, you'd be surprised how much you can get out when you can get directly at the dents from both sides. A very minimum of filler would be needed then. |

A good body guy can salvage those and make them look excellent. You might not even have to take the skins off. I agree with tyrodtom.
