Just started in November working on SC Rambler that I have had since new. Too many years in storage to count. Just semi retired from my Landscape Business. It has never been apart till now working on brake system now got new Calipers. Also purchased the new Edelbrock STR-11 I thought I better get it now before they are all gone. All though it may be many months before get to motor. Every couple of years I would turn over motor with socket wrench on dampener bolt. I hope someone can help with carbs I want to run Edelbrock 500s. Have tried to get info from Edelbrock never get a response from them from them on any questions. I thought they could set them up with the right jets and so forth. I just can not bring myself to put on Hollys makes me think about all the Fords I stomped on back in the day. I plan on Crane Hydraulic roller HR-224-339-2s-12 KT pistons KT or Molnar rods. Would like to use my factory heads. If someone here in Arizona could direct me to shop to balance crank and maybe head work. Looks like my only choice is Doug headers 1/58" because of clearance issues. Any suggestions would be appreciated I am older than the car so I have to get on the ball so I will be still young enough to drive. Have been reading the forum for many months now. sounds like there are some experienced AMCers. Thanks

Welcome, where in AZ are you?
i have used S&S Machine in mesa for years. Todd is a great guy. never had a problem.
what they can't do they farm out to Basko i believe.
what's your definition of head work? just a rebuild and a surfacing or porting polishing, etc?
i have used CBA specialists in chandler to flow heads in the past.
there are now more header choices.
ARH. search for them. IIRC they have stainless and lifetime warranty?
Redline performance in Mesa built some custom stepped headers for my 69 rambler with a 401/th400 in it.

I run the Edelbrock 500 AVS (1804) carbs on a Tunnel Ram. Worked very well right from the box on a stout 401. Just had to set idle mixture and speed so far and linkage of course.

I have noticed on the Edelbrock 500 AFB style that the boosters were terrible. It seemed that was how they “made it smaller” was to fill in the Venturi. Yuck. I feel you’d be better off with a modern Holley, custom for your application, picked after you settle on your engine specs.

Thanks for your input on carbs, I would like to run the Edelbrock 500. Like I said just got started on suspension need to get new coils I think. The leaf springs do not have an arch left they are flat. Got the calipers and crossram on order from Galvins and going get coils and leafs from them also unless I get feed back from any in the forum they seem reputable. Have many months left working on suspension. Will cut an paste all the info I have received so far. Getting quite a file of info on parts. I live here in Phoenix since 1979 moved from Ohio brought SC Rambler with me had been in storage back there also. A lot of stories behind the reason for low millage it has under 20,000. But in good shape body and paint. Also the motor and all mechanicals are still factory. What ever parts I remove I will store just in case someone wants to put it back stock. That's is why I may not replace pistons and rods. Just crossram and cam open to any suggestions. Really not planning on selling till I am too old HA HA.

An Edelbrock 600 and 500 are the same Venturi size. The difference is the boosters on the 500 are larger. Yes they are more restrictive to WOT airflow but provide a better signal to the metering wells and in this cars with dual carbs equaling 1000 cfm that is a good thing. In a dual carb setup, Edelbrock is far simpler to setup and maintain on a street car

Would contact Edelbrock by telephone maybe.  Gotta imagine a pair of carbs for a crossram or other dual 4 barrel intake are set up different than other carbs, with different air bleeds and such and so on.
Just spoutin' off, I'm a Holley guy, but Holley doesn't offer what I'd want to put on a AMC CrossRam.
I'd want a pair of 585 CFM Dual Line Double Pumpers, like the 2nd Design issued for the 1968 Chevy
302 CrossRam, Holley List 4295, which happen to be the very 1st Holley Double Pumper Carbs
as far as all the research I have done, including talking directly to the GM Development Engineer.
The 1st Design used on the 302 Crossram was a List 4210 Single Squirter Mechanical Secondary
which is kinda currently available as the "Tunnel Ram" 2x4 Carbs List 9776but they have smaller Throttle Plates, less CFM, and a different style linkage.  Both of those, the List 4210 and the 9776, are like the "original" 2x4 Holley List 4584 Carbs AMC specified and that are NHRA Approved for the Hurst S/S AMX Cars, and are also Single Squirter Mechanical Secondary and 585-ish CFM.
The same Venturi Diameters and throttle Blade Diameters are shared by all of those,
List 4210, 4295, and 4584, and they are the same as all universal List 1850 600 CFM Carbs.
But respect that Edelbrock Carbs are what are wanted, would just do something to try and
get a pair of Edelbrocks that were known to be set up for a 2x4 installation.
Might investigate mounting the Driver's Side Carb "backwards" to maybe improve plenum mixture distribution.
Intake Plenum Floor "wet distribution" was an important significant development detail the retired GM Engineer emphasized.

The Edelbrock 1804 is already calibrated for dual quad applications. I stole 2 of them from an inexperienced ebay seller for $220 each new. They run very well out of the box and fit nicely on a tunnel ram with no hesitation and great throttle response in my car. The new 650 AVS2 looks like a great street carb option too I may try on my next 360 build

I would look for carbs with annular boosters especially on the primary side.

The Holley 390 or 450 cfm would give you much sharper throttle response.
PHAT69AMX is correct any carbs you use on a 2x4 set-up need to be modified or you will always have too rich a mixture.

800-900 Total cfm should be plenty for a street car, much more and you will have bad street manners.

No dual double pumpers on the street, they will wash out your rings.

Good luck,

Ron.

At the risk of ruffling some feathers...

Dang old bad advise seems to never die.

When running dual 4bbl carbs there is a reduction
in "signal" to the venture boosters.

Therefore…

To run two 4bbl carbs you generally need to
ENRICHEN the jetting to avoid lean out.

For a high rpm race motor things can be a little different.

BUT for a street motor lean it out at your peril.

For a race motor, start rich for safety.

IMO unless you are looking for the old dual holley look
use 600 carters.
