 anyone know the part number for the small freeze plugs on the head? They  run along where the manifold bolts up.All I can find are the large ones on the block

Nothing special about them. Just measure the diameter of the hole and go to the local parts supply, they will have them.

I don't know why every one insists on calling them freeze plugs. The reason the holes are in the casting to start with is to shake out the foundry sand from the cooling passages in the head. The plugs where originally installed with Loctite

yeah, the name is now like "Kleenex" or something, any meaning long lost, it's just a name, not a concept. welch plug, freeze plug, ...

lol, wikipedia calls them "core plugs", a name I've never heard, but probably doesn't matter. as good as name as any.

A true Welch plug doesn't have a "shoulder" around it like most modern plugs do. You're right -- it's a generic term now, the same as people calling the sills of a unit body "frame rails", and "subframe" connectors are used as extra braces between front and rear SILLS on cars that don't have a subframe, like early Camaros and some other GM cars had.

And I think AMC themselves called them freeze plugs.

they're all just a buncha frickn DOOHICKEYS!

we should just call them leak plugs, or rust plugs.

at least us AMC nuts don't have to deal with left-handed lugnuts like GM and Chrysler and Steadybreaker did. that's gotta be embarrassing. i remember when tire changing places had a little tray of them on the tire changer machine.
