HI,
just putting back my 69 AMX rear end and i can't remember the shock location forgot to take a picture when removed. IIRC the right shock is on the front of the axle and the left one is on the back both on the inside u bolt. both torque links are exterior of leaf springs and adjusted as per shop manual I can't remember if there is a washer or lock washer on the front leaf springs bolts as well I'd apreciate a picture but an explanation would be fine too Thanks for your knowledge |

From 1967-72 AMC Parts Manual for 1968 and on ( 30 ) AMX and ( 70 ) Javelin
iirc 1969 AMX did not have staggered shocks, but can be fitted with them but... requires 2 bottom shock mount plates from the same side and a little modification up top ? Edited by PHAT69AMX - Dec/06/2018 at 2:44pm |

thanks for your reply, from this picture i can see there's no washers on the front eye bushing bolt but can't see the shocks disposition, iirc it was'' right shock front of axle and left shock on back axle '' am i correct??? as for the torque links i see they are on the outside of rear leaf spring

I recently installed new Monroe gas shocks and rebuilt torque links. Here is a picture of the driver's side.

On my '69 AMX both rear shocks were behind the rear axle...
But... and this was 30 years ago... I did pay a shop to install new Leaf Springs and I have no idea if they put it back together right... now you have me wondering... As mentioned, I don't think 1969 had "staggered shocks"... but could be wrong... I thought staggered rear shocks came along sometime later... BUT do remember folks posting that staggered shocks could be "done" to a 1969... BUT a person had to get a 2nd Bottom Shock Mounting Part so they had 2 of "one hand" but I can not remember which "hand", left-hand or right-hand... and... seem to remember it also required some modification on one side up at the top rear shock mount.
AND... that 1967-72 AMC Parts Manual Diagram I posted sure seems to "imply" that the Shock Bottom Mount is IN FRONT ! ? of the Axle Tube.... what ?... The Diagram has to be wrong I guess....

I think it takes ( 2 ) LEFT SIDE Leaf Spring Plate Assemblies to mount
Staggered Rear Shocks on a 1969 AMX that does NOT have Staggered stock... The Hurst S/S AMX R-W-B Parts Catalog sheets show in Group 11 Qty (1) Left 318 9332 Rear Leaf Spring Plate Assembly, which I "assume" means this "Left" Side Plate was to replace the "stock" Right Side Plate and allow Staggered Rear Shocks... with the Right Side Rear Shock being relocated to be in Front of the Axle... Does that sound "correct" and / or "reasonable" ????
