Picking up a 77 Hornet Sportabout tonight or tomorrow. I know it needs work on the shifter and I believe it’s a side shifted transmission (on the floor). Seems I was told it’s a 3-speed. Anyone know what transmission “should” be in this car? I’m reading up on it and I’m reading SR4? Maybe T150? SR4 is a 4-speed and both are top shift style, correct? I need to take a closer look when I get out there.

  I had a 77 Gremlin with a 3 speed floor shift,  it was a T-150.
Shift levers on the side.

Seems like maybe just the Jeep versions were top shift then. That would make sense.

T-150 three speed (sometimes listed as 150T or 150-T), SR4 four speed. SR4 looks like a T-5... it's a direct predecessor to the T-5.

all AMC passenger car transmissions are side shifted. only the Jeeps were top shifters.

there's a jeep T14 and a passenger car T14 that probably share a lot of guts but are definitely not interchangeable otherwise. never did side by side but i imagine the nose is the same but the case and tail are different.

T14 was gone by... 1970? sumptin like that.

That all makes sense. I’m just not familiar with manual transmissions in cars. Thanks, fellas. I should be going to pick up the car sometime this week. It’ll be gas sipping commuter while I slowly build the ‘73 into a more rowdy girl.

Some top loaded transmissions have side shifter AND top shifter versions. The case is usually made the same with either plugs in the side shifter holes for the top shift version or the holes aren't drilled in the side shift bosses. A few had enough sales to use two different cases, but generally parts interchange, so with a few adjustments (and plugging the side holes) a (usually truck) top shift cover an be used on the side shift case. Can't recall if the T14 was like that or not, but some of the Jeep  trannys were.

I’m pretty sure the shifter in this car is gonna be pretty gacked. I’m sure time, effort, and a little fabrication will get it working well again. Otherwise maybe I can find a decent aftermarket option.

T14s were all behind the 304s. In 74 the 150 started to come out. My 74 has the T14. My 79 AMX has the SR4...which is a top loader...its also a 304 car.

> T14's all behind 304's

innaresting! it has the same front pattern and input shaft as the excreble T96 (which would last nearly an hour behind even a misfiring 304). i know essentially zero about the backside of the pre-72 AMC V8's, bells and all that. i was under the impression that the pre-72 V8 and the pre-72 sixes had incompatible transmission choices.

but if the T14 bolts to a pre-72 V8 bell, it implies that pre-72 V8 manual transmissions will fit behind the pre-72 sixes. nearly doubling the transmission choices to -- two! lol
