From the picture in the first post it looks like the carburetor that came on the Cobra of the era. Trying to get a picture of the original QFT carburetor seems to be difficult. This QFT carburetor comes very close with the different throttle linkage that looks like it would not need the depression beside the carburetor mount to rotate:

Phat has all his ducks in a row on this!
FYI - quick fuel technologies (QFT) came out with a NHRA legal replacement carburetor. I think it is called QFT585? It was a performance enhancement for the guys running NHRA SS with their cross ram 390 cars. Unfortunately, they no longer produce it, now that Holley owns QFT, I would like to find a pair of those QFT Carburetors. Never know when they may come in handy…

bwamx - A number of period sources prove the S/S AMX Crossram was first fitted with Holley list 4210 carburetors. They were 1968 "1st Design" Chevy Z28 Trans Am 302 Crossram carburetors that Chevy quickly superseded in mid-1968 to the "2nd Design" Holley List 4295 which just so happens by the way to be the 1st EVER Holley Double Pumper carburetor. So the List 4210 was now "obsolete" and along comes the AMC Hurst S/S AMX Project in Dec '68, Jan '69, and the List 4210 got a second chance and became the Holley List 4584 AMC Part # 448 7187 S/S AMX 2x4 Crossram carburetor.
The 4210 / 4584 are Primary side only Single Pumper Carbs with 1:1 ratio mechanical Secondaries, as well as a "660 Center Squirter Style" Cam-Follower-In-Slot 1:1 Bellcrank, but with an additional "feature" due to the z28 Crossram 2x4 carb mounting, plumbing, and linkage. Only the 4210 & 4584 have a little extra material with a 1/4" dia. hole in it at the BOTTOM of the Bellcrank. This extra hole is for a simple "Interlink Rod" to attach to that GM used to actuate both carbs simultaneously with a single throttle cable. The passenger side S/S AMX List 4584 Holley carbs Bellcrank is actually ALTERED to clear the Lid Relief Pocket for the passenger side bellcrank. The "extra GM specific material and hole" at the bottom of the GM specific bellcrank IS GROUND OFF of the passenger side SS AMX list 4584 carburetor! The obsolete Chevy Z28 2x4 Holley List 4210 has a number of unique features that were carried over when used on the S/S AMX that were not needed on the AMX. When the Hurst S/S AMX was done the Holley Double Pumper did NOT exist yet, except at GM where they developed it in very very early 1968. Holley did not unleash the Double Pumper onto the general public until about January 1970. So, the AMC Edelbrock Crassram Intake was designed when there were NO Double Pumper Carbs, and the universal Throttle Bellcrank we are all familiar with had not yet been designed either. The AMC Crossram was designed for a Holley List 1850 Vacuum Secondary or a list 4224 660 Center Squirter, and the Lid Features or mounting clearance details reflect that. If I am properly understanding your picture and your post, there are some reasons in history why there could be some carburetor mounting issues. Peace.

And as a side note. I have never came up with an answer to my original post. Every crossram I look at and check, I still have not seen another one with the same configuration of the bolt holes as mine ,and lacking the clearance for the accelerator pump.

Please take it for what it is, the fallible recollections(mine!) of an offhand comment from Larry Mitchell. Larry is by far the more reliable, but he never cited any source for his information. All that being said, being AMC'ers sometimes this is all we have!
