I had trouble with the 12" electric, wouldn't keep my AMX cool. Changed to flex mechanical 18" and fan shroud. Stays 190 degrees now.

The math says your only using 58% of your radiator.
Stock rad 24"x 16"= 384 sqin 2 x 12" = 226 sqin 1 x 16" = 201 sqin Old school was "it is always better to pull then push through a rad", but that may not be current. Still your overheating is likely because your not using a big chunk of rad area. I'd think putting the 2 x 12" on the back and leaving the whole front area open would give better cooling.

do you have a thermostat in it and what temp is it you mustrun a thermostat or a restrictor the trick is to slow the flow thru the rad and make sure to shroud the fans to get max draw

You may be onto something....... shrouds cover so much of the radiator now they are possibly having a NEGATIVE impact as not enough air can flow through the REST of the radiator. In effect, it's like cutting that radiator in half and using only half of it. (exaggeration, but you may see my point) Small fans and that much shroud means much of the radiator isn't doing anything. My 73 used to over-heat in town on a day over about 85 or 90 degrees. Funny thing - I put a THERMOSTAT in it and guess what........ Yeah, the PO didn't have a stat in it.
It had a newly rebuilt two row core radiator that was spotless clean inside. I mean it looked like brand new inside that radiator. Now it runs in the normal range pretty much all the time. (I did get my hands on a non-dated radiator with a three row core and swapped that in just because I had it and the history of the car but the stat actually did help it) |

If you like electric fans, then you really should check into the contour dual 2spd fans and shroud, much better over the 3 you're currently using. Been running this in my 401 daily driver Gremlin, for about 8months, fully automated hi and low speeds, with A/C. |

Am I understanding that you have one fan on the opposite side pushing against the other 2??? This seems counter intuitive?
