Finally getting some numbers off my engine. 3196291C on the heads which I understand are the  good 1970 heads. The block has the "401" casting on the side and has the part number of 3198951 which from what I found is a 401 block from 1971 til 1978 .... Is there a way to narrow down the date the engine was put together - without a valve cover tag????

Early 71 401s had the 6291 head castings.

Trouble is I don’t know if the heads are original to this engine...

And those early '71 heads could be 291I rather than 291C.

Heads and block should have a casting year with a small pointer, like on a dial. That helps show when those items were cast.
74 Hornet Hatchback X twins (since 1977)
62 American Convertible (still worth the $50 I spent in 1973!) AMCRC #513, AMO #384
70 AMX 360 4-speed (since 1981)

Block casting date is in the lifter gallery.
Also the foundry ID as to where it was cast is there.

If it's a 70 through 76 it should be a CFD block.
CFD is GM. Yep, GM cast our beloved ramblers for a number of years.
