Hi Folks - I have a 69 Rambler American 440 model, 4-door.  The passenger seat-back flops all the way back with only light pressure on it. (Any time I have a passenger, the seat will flop all the way back to flat unless they sit up straight with no weight on the seat-back.)

When I take the adjustor handle off the side of the seat and look at the mechanism, I can't see anything broken, etc.   There seems to be a bar that runs thru the bottom of the seat back to the other side.  (These are seperate front seats, not a bench).

Has anyone experienced this and know of a fix? (hopefully without having to take apart the upholstery)
I'm even willing to lock the seat into place permanently, it doesn't have to adjust.

First try cleaning and lubing the reclining mechanism.  It's probably sticking and not locking into place.

Also, if it resembles what's on my 67 Ambassador the handle and mechanism can bind on the trim around the bottom of the seat.

Thanks guys! I've tried the cleaning/lubing already. I'll check for binding on the trim, but I've already taken the mechanism apart as much as i would go and watched the flopping happen - trying to see what wasn't holding.

Any others ideas from the group?

Is the spring still attached to the stop ratchet?

Yes.   Looks to be in good shape still too.   I'll see if I can get some photos up here

Here some pics of the seat latch mechanism.   - the first is when it is closed/locked into place.   The second is when it's open. (the pics are labeled, and I threw in a couple of the car too! :-))

(.....well apparently we can't add images here. I've tried the 'paste from Word option too.  I think we have to host them somewhere with a url?)

Welcome to the forum Mark. I'm having the same problem with my car, but haven't tried to fix it yet. I believe you have to post a number of times before you can post pictures... maybe 20 or something like that?

The teeth may be well worn inside the reclining drum.
Long time AMC fan. Ambassador 343, AMX 390, Hornet 360, Spirit 304 and Javelin 390. All but javelin bought new.

any thoughts on a fix - or even a way to disable the reclining mechanism so the seat stays locked upright?
