I recently acquired a correct 7.35-14 Space Saver spare in a '68 AMX parts car. Although it's never been inflated the steel wheel is so rusty that it cannot be used. Has anyone had a Space Saver tire transferred to a different wheel without inflating it?

I had one done 30 years ago. The shop said they would never do another. Hopefully it won't damage the fifty year old tire..

I would think you would have to inflate it to get it to seat on the new wheel. Then maybe use a vacuum pump to pull the air out of it

I have been wondering the same thing. I picked up a like new, never on a rim, spacesaver tire & have been pondering how to get it on a rim. I think you would have to figure out a way to keep the tire from inflating while still allowing the beads to seat.

The space saver mounts like any other tire. Once on the rim; it is inflated to seat the bead. Deflate and it collapses as it should.

Are you sure? I remember seeing one many years ago that did not collapse after being inflated. Even with no air it resembled a regular (but very thin) tire.

Yes, mmaher94087 is correct.. it is supposed to deflate back to its original shape. However, 50 year old rubber does not always cooperate. I've had one of them not deflate correctly. Twenty years ago, I tried inflating one to re-shape it but it ended up worse when it was deflated... I would be mostly concerned about damaging the bead or sidewall, removing or installing it. Fifty year old rubber does not have the elasticity that it originally had.. |

Take the valve core out and use a ratchet strap around the tread to compress.
