Ran across a 68 390 for sale locally. Just curious on the value in comparison to what he wants. What I know about it is the, came out of a 68 Amx has a m-12 auto attached to it but not included in the sale, don't need it anyway. The car sat for years in a yard, the owner said the engine ran when parked then a local member bought the car, sold the body and the engine and tranny was stored in a shop under his work bench for the last 15 years or so. Out of the elements, it is totally complete except carb is missing and I believe the air cleaner, pulleys and all. It seems it has never been rebuilt, but really don't know for sure, engine turns over just fine. I know it's a crap shoot until a person tears into it. But anyway, up here in the Northwest a person just doesn't run across these things very often. The person I would get this from is a friend and a very much a AMC guy. Any thoughts on a value, he wants a $1000 for it.
Thanks for any input before I pull the plug.

If it turns freely then it's worth the risk at that price.

I agree with Boris.  Seems like 1000-1500 for a complete core is the going rate.  Not uncommon to see the crank for 4-500 and the block 4-500.

X2.  The magic phrase is "...it is totally COMPLETE except carb is missing...".  It's that little stuff that always is a pain to get and costs money.  If you can get it all with the engine you are money and grief ahead.

I have plenty of Motorcraft 2bbl carbs that I need to sell so this type of issue is negligible to me. Just pay attention to head gaskets and exhaust manifold seals and you should be good.
