Look what I just scored for the Javelin.  Real Minilites!! They're going to look great on the car!

New windshield arrived and it and the new (used) back glass are being installed today.

I'm actually thinking about attempting to do my own body work and paint. I can start with the less conspicuous areas, like the fairing under the front bumper, and see how I do.  I've been doing my own suspension parts, steering wheels, etc. with a spray gun for a couple years now and am getting some confidence in my ability to pull this off. I'm actually more worried about the body work, block sanding, prepping etc. than the actual painting.

I also know of a perfect hood locally for just $100.  My hood has some dents, and I think it would be easier just to buy this dent-free hood and repaint it.  It actually has a new paint job on it now... it's just the wrong color.  I'm told that repairing dents in hoods isn't easy, and that would take care of all but about three of the dents on my car.

I'm hoping just to be able to repair and blend the areas that need it, keeping most of the paint original and new, single stage acrylic enamel on the rest.  If that doesn't work, I'll just repaint the whole thing.

They're 14" unfortunately, but at the price I couldn't pass them up. I have a set of 205/60R14 coming for them. If they don't look right on the Javelin they'll go on my Opel GT (with adapters).

Most of the Minilites for street use are aluminum, though the originals were magnesium.

Yes, had it since I was 19.  Lots of history with the Pregnant Lemon, as my Father-in-Law used to call it. Here it is with my AMX at a local car show last year.

As mentioned a couple posts ago, I'm thinking of painting the car myself.  Rather than do a complete repaint, I'm going to preserve the original paint wherever possible and just repaint the areas that need it.  I think that will be easier than it sounds, because I have the dividing line of the horizontal rub rail running the complete length of the car, and I suspect that the bottom has been painted before.  That's also the area that needs the most attention, because of damaged paint in places below the rub rail that have exposed the white skim coat underneath.  There are also some scratches and dents, again mostly below the rub rail.

I started by removing the front valance today, and boy is it a mess!  I don't know much about the history of this car, but it appears it sat out in the desert for years with a car cover over it.  The top of the car is pretty good, but the undercarriage was dusty and dirty, and it seems to have been near some sort of corrosive soil.  The nearest town, 21 miles away from where the car came from, is called "Chloride", so that's a pretty good indicator that the soil in the area was high in salt.  That would explain why parts that sat close to the ground, like the front and rear valances, have this crusty, salty looking coating on them. I think that explains the white speckles in the top photo, but maybe someone reading this will have a better idea as to what caused them.  They're down low on the left front fender too.

This is going to be my test piece to see how well I do at painting.  Tomorrow I'll strip it down, take the dents out and put a coat of epoxy primer on it.  I'm picking up a new paint gun this weekend, so will leave the top coat until early next week.

I also bought some LED interior lights off E-Bay and got them working a couple days ago.  Turned out to be a bigger job than planned because the driver's door switch was not working properly, and I had to remove the kick panel to access the switch wiring behind.  Anyway, the LEDs work great, and I got four of them off of E-Bay for about $6.00, while a pair of them at O'Reilly's would have run me nearly $25! I'm tempted now to take the dash out again and put some LEDs in for the instrument lights.

The previous owner had either tried to install a windshield himself or else tried to fix a leak with black butyl sealant, which was all over the trim on the A pillars and top of the windshield, and even some blobs on the headliner, sun visors and rear view mirror mount.  I almost didn't buy the car because of this, thinking the headliner was probably ruined, but it turns out that mineral spirits do a very good job of dissolving this crud without damaging the fabric or foam underneath.  Both the headliner and fabric sun visors were saved, and one would be hard pressed to know that they were ever damaged!

About the butyl on interior parts. My 73 had been in hot areas in its 10 year life. Actually had black runs along the driver side A-pillar, but not anywhere else. I used some citrus solvent hand cleaner with pumice to remove it.

When I removed the trim to do the cleaning, seems like there was a lot of butyl that was squeezed out during assembly. As if it was gun applied.

My 71 did not have such a mess anywhere, as if a perfect application was done.
