Hi guys, I have a 72 Javelin with the 401 and 4-speed. I want to take the 401 engine out and rebuild it. In the meantime, I have a good 304 engine I would like to drop in. Does anyone know if the 304 will mate up with the 4-speed. Thanks for your help, Tom

It should bolt right in.  You will need the correct flywheel for the 304.

Takes a pilot bushing for the only optioned automatic too. Whether you know it or not, there's always options here. 304/360 are kind of a married platform where the flexplate/flywheel can be swapped with one another. 401 is a completely different beast. Does your 304 still have its factory flywheel?

You are so wrong.  304/360 do NOT use the same flywheel.  I found that out.   the only transmission that uses a bushing in the crank is the TH400.   None of the others use a bushing of any kind.  (The 250/287/327 Rambler engines are not part of this question so they dont apply)

Just so its understood.................  every engine (V8) uses a displacement specific flywheel/ flexplate.   meaning 304 uses a 304 specific one 360 uses another.. ETC.........................................

Am I in some sort of universe where I'm only encountering Gen III stuff that is built wrong? I must have missed something somewhere because that seems to be the case if you can confirm something that doesn't work. Ermm

The BW autos usually have a pilot bushing for centering the converter. Don't know about the TF stuff. They may use a thin bushing as well.
