Well, I decided that having a heater/defroster might actually be a good idea. When I built the car and fired the engine for the first time, the factory heater core poured all over the passenger floor, so I bypassed it at the time.
Questions: How much of a pain is it to remove the heater core? Is anyone making replacements for the aftermarket? (1969 Javelin SST with A/C) Is it practical, cost-wise, to have the original re-cored? As always, thanks guys! |

It is not a real hard job to replace, because you have pretty good access to the heater box under the dash.
A new one is a bit hard to find, but they are out there. Put a 'wanted' ad on the Forum for starters! Good luck! |

Does the dash pad have to come off? I have a TSM, I'm just being lazy plus the TSM will often have you remove more than you really NEED to remove if you're creative and wiggle things around.

No do not remove dash pad....glove box, long phillips screw driver....pull the heater hoses, remove the blower motor and plate assy off in the engine compartment. Unclip the cables from the heater core housing...a/c cars are easier then non-A/C, since the box assy is in two pieces on a/c car. The two boxes kind of dovetail together, about at the right side of the radio pod. 68/9 cars are about the easiest to change heater core compared to all other year AMX/Javelin. If you want to do a top notch job DMT makes a seal lit to replace all the heater box seals and makes a real nice tight and quiet heater box. Hope this helps

Awesome! Good to know. I guess my best bet will be to have it re-cored by a radiator shop.

The AMC vendors carry heater cores. I acquired a heater core for my 70 Javelin about 5 years from NAPA. Might be worth researching as to what is available locally. Not sure, but the few radiators repair shops still around would most likely be more expensive for a repair then a part replacement.

Seems to me the 68/69 were getting hard to come by. I assume the 70 is the same but I'm not sure. I had a heck of a time finding one for my '69 in 2015 and ended up restoring the old one. Fortunately, mine had no leaks. I seem to recall that maybe Galvins will recore them.

If the heater core is like the 70, the difference between years is the mounting flanges that secure to the box.
I had replied to a older thread on my core in comparison to the one that was posted for replacement. The guy got a newer year core off the shelf and swapped brackets. Though soldering will need to be done, but should be fairly that a recore, as most charge extra for stock items and extra work, if needing to swap out inlet and outlet tubes. |
