I am replacing the timing cover and oil pump on a 1972 Javelin 304. I noticed the filter adapter has one less hole than the original, which has 3. All parts are from Bulltear. Was this a design change? What's the story?

No filter by-pass.   The PH11 and equivalents don't have an internal bypass, so needs one in the filter mount. For cold starts, best to use a filter with built-in bypass if you use a filter mount without or if you plug the stock bypass.

A Fram HP2 has a built-in 25psi bypass, fits like stock and is a better filter than the cheap Frams.

If you fit the later threaded adapter (available from various on-line retailers or your Mopar/Jeep dealer) with 3/4"-16 thread, then you can use the common and better quality Ford FL-1A filter or equivalent (which has a built-in bypass).

Some run a filter with no bypass, but to me it's safer to run one with a bypass then without. No filter is 100% efficient anyway, so relies on multiple passes to keep the oil in the pan clean (unless you have a catastrophic failure or don't do regular oil changes).

Hope this helps,RD

Ah, use the screw in Jeep oil filter adapter from Dodge, it used a Ford FL1A oil filter.

Basically the one without the extra hole, elimitnates the faulty return spring issue on the high pressure bypass circuit. Ford designed it interal to the filter which is best.

What years of Jeep had the 3/4-16 threaded adapter? Is there a Chrysler PN for the 3/4-16 adapter?

You need to be careful on using the adapter. As stated here, they changed it to a 22mm thread after 2-1-99:
Your better off getting an adapter off an older Jeep in the wrecker or at least check the threads. There are posts about people stripping the oil filter/adapter threads trying to get old filters to fit the new thread.
Why they changed the part and not the part number is beyond my understanding.

I just (15 minutes ago) installed one from a large online/catalog speed shop, which seems to fit fine.
Cost was $4.99 (plus shipping, of course).  Quality was fine, was nice thick steel with a well formed hex in the center.  Not special, just normal stuff.

I then threaded on a Wix 51515 (1515 at Napa) which is an equivalent to the FL-1A.
