I was looking through my Indianapolis 500 Chronicle and discovered that Jerry Sneva drove the National Engineering AMC car in the 1979 500. He qualified 21st and finished 31st. The car dropped out on lap 16 with turbo trouble. I will have to see if I can dig up some photos of this car.

I found these pictures while in Indy at the Speedway yesterday of Jerry Sneva and the 1979 AMC Indy car.

I also found this shot of the AMC Indy V-8. You can see the rocker shaft assembly through the cutaway valve cover and the extra hump down the center of the block.

I also found another picture of the Jerry Grant car on the internet.

The "extra hump" down the center is part of a revised oiling system. It's the main oil gallery, it doesn't have the passages thru the lifter bores as in all other factory blocks.

I thought it had to be a main oil galley. I didn't notice at first but now see the tie bar on the lifter, signifying a roller cam.

Keep in mind that the Indy Car AMC aluminum engine block tended to be porous. LRDaum

Is the currently available aluminum AMC block from Indy Cylinder heads better than this block?

The first thing I told the shop to do was check for porosity. It all checked out good. After discussing with the shop, a 4.00” bore size was used. This gives me thick walls with good support from the block. The heads have 1.94” intake and 1.55” exhaust valves. I wanted to keep things metal safe, I’m not looking for max power.

As for the Indy Cylinder Heads block vs the AMC block, the ICH block does have additional ribs in the valley and can be finished with a much larger bore. Think it still needs some work, others on the forum have experience with it.

Indy or Edelbrock heads will flow more than the AMC aluminum heads. I found out from Barry Allen they are limited with the valve size.

Building an AMC made all aluminum engine with a flat plane crank is just too cool to pass up. I intend to add some boost, probably with something like a Whipple supercharger.

I'd also like to find more photos of the engine with better detail of the oil system and coolant plumbing.
