1970 Mark Donohue SST Javelin.  The driver side rear shock has what appears to be a factory (or very professionally installed and paint matched) mount that doesn't use the hole with the cap behind the rear seat.  It's a separate additional plate with 4 bolts and the lower part of the shock connects behind the rear axle instead of in front.  There is no damage to the original mount point, so it's not a repair.

Is this right? It seems a little off to me.  One in front and one behind makes some sense, but it looks like an oops they corrected after production started.  Is there a better setup that's not too expensive and easy to install?

Ok you did not say what car this is on or post up a pirture of it.
I would have to say yes this is factory stock on Javelins & think AMX.
This was done to control wheel hop. How well does it work............not well!

I have a 68 X with stock mounts. The are behind with the four bolt plate for a pin end shock on top. Might be to provide room for the torque links?

Rambler SC/Ramblers have the same offset mount setup as the Donohue.  It helps to control axle wrap.

My '70 MD Javelin had this setup. It is called staggered rear shocks. It's purpose was to stop wheel hop on hard launches. It worked well on mine.

What you describe is correct for the '68 - '70 Javelin. The driver's side shock mounts behind the rear axle tube and uses the plate you described. The passenger side shock mounts in front of the rear axle tube and uses a mount in the crossmember between the inner wheel wells.

The '68 - '70 AMX has a plate on each side to mount both shocks behind the rear axle tube.

I don't know what the '71 - '74 Javelin uses.

To remove the rear shocks, is it easier to just remove the shock with the top plate?  Seems like it would be as that top nut looks to be hard to get to?

Yes, that is the correct way for both shocks on an AMX. On a Javelin one of the shocks is accessed from inside the car.
