Go drive it like you stole it. It takes a good 2500 miles to seat moly rings

crosshatch may be part of the problem. as above, drive it hard. that will get them to seat if the cylinder walls are ok.

How many miles does the motor have on it and what kind of rings are in it? It's been my experience that chrome rings can be a bugger to break in but chrome-moly rings should seat in relatively quickly. Definitely under 100 miles if everything is right. Why did the former owner think the rings had not seated?

I was told the engine smokes and compression might be low, I just purchased this complete package, engine is 390 12.5 to 1 comp. big cam,
supposed high horse but you know about that and no dyno sheet, car went 9.6 in quarter mile? |

Boy, that's not much to go on. You apparently have the heads pulled, what did the top of the pistons and the combustion chambers look like? That should give you a clue about oil consumption.

If it a 12.5 compression that ran 9.6 in the quarter then was it a race only engine? If so, 1/4 mile at a time does not add up very quick. The engine I am redoing bearings on had less than 1500 miles and there was only a smidgen of the surface on the moly rings that showed typical break in smoothness so they were a long way from fully broken in at 1500 miles although they seemed to be seated well.
From what you are describing it sounds like the engine was put together with a "loose fit" build for racing which a lot of old school guys used to do and which caused the engines to burn a little oil. Did you check the valve seals and guides to ensure the oil consumption is not coming from the top?

I am just getting it off the trailer, I have pulled the heads but the pan was pulled, I have some work to do before I believe the 9.6. I did not hear it run but talked to a machine shop that listened to the motor and witnessed the smoke, that's all I got to go on for now, all this is coming from the seller and the machine shop he uses the motor was put together down in Ocala fla. Looks like a tear down will be the best bet and see exactly where the motor is at, Will keep you updated as I pull it down.
