Any suggestions for this? Do I need to put anything on the threads that seat it in to the block?

Several things to check. First, lay a straight edge across the pan, and measure the depth from the ruler to the bottom. Install the pickup in the block, and lay the straight edge across the pickup, ensuring it's level (may have to bend it a bit). The pickup should be 1/4 - 3/8" off the bottom of the pan. Next, measure how far the pickup is screwed into the block, remove it, and make sure it isn't screwed in so far as to block the oil passage in the block -- this is not likely, but some early pickups had an extended, non-threaded edge on the end that should be removed.
Once you have it mocked up for proper depth and verify no blockage, coat the threads with sealer (Permatex #2 or the like), and screw it back in to the mock up depth. When you install the pan, the pan gasket will push the pan ~1/8" farther from the pickup. OEM installs had a plastic button on the bottom of the pickup to prevent it from being sucked to the bottom of the pan. Some guys like to replicate this by tack-welding a nut on the bottom. |
